Size: MIDGET PINT
Color: STRONG AQUA
Closure: Original SMALL MOUTH unlined zinc cap with flared lower edge (smaller than a regular midget Mason cap). Condition notes: the bottom projecting flange had lost a section about an inch long, and was subsequently repaired by attaching (glue-ing) a very thin flat donut-shaped zinc ring onto the bottom surface (see photo). Probably done by the late Ed Shaw. Fairly well done, but could probably be more properly restored if desired. The rest of the cap is solid without holes or splits.
Appearance: sparkling glass with a trace of content haze
Condition: nice condition including an excellent ground lip with very little flaking
Embossing: n/a
Base: perfectly flat base typical of the earliest Crowleytown series of jars
Age: c1858-1860
Availability: Rare with cap. This jar was blown in the same original mold that was later re-cut to add the traditional Masons Patent lettering and used to manufacture the more familiar version of the Crowleytown jar with Masons 1858 lettering. This cap is one of perhaps only TWO currently known examples of this cap in existence. The other known cap resides in a private collection and sits on the patent dated small-mouth Crowleytown midget blown in this same mold but with the added Masons 1858 lettering.
Margaret Shaw collection.
