Description

Size:  QUART

Color:  BLACK

Closure:  zinc cap

Appearance: good, a few surface smudges

Condition:  flaking along the ground mouth, a 1/4" open bubble on the lower right side as shown

Embossing:  strong

Base:  "21"

Age:  Made in 1877 by the Hemingray Glass Co of Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky. In that year Adam Dickey of Middletown, Ohio obtained a patent for black glass to be used in preserving fruit under the claim that the opacity of the glass would prevent the "deleterious effects of light" on the stored produce. See the Patent. The concept of opaque black glass for canning jars was not successful in the market, as evidenced by the very few examples of these jars now in existence.

Availability: Rare
