A patent model with the original tags. The box/can measures about 5-1/2" tall. It appears that an earlier production model of this patentee's can (impressed patent date on the sheet metal base is 1878) was apparently used for a later patent application for an improved can (July 20, 1886). The tag refers to two model boxes (cans) being included, and there are indeed two cans/boxes. Both cans have the same crudely-cut hole at the shoulder. It is possible that the holes were cut purposely in the period. The lids are wooden and painted black, and it's hard to say if the lids are original or not. A rare old patent model.
